The Next Steps:We are currently developing a catalog of species/genus responses of fish and aquatic invertebrates to a suite of generic (e.g., urban land use, agriculture) and specific (e.g., nitrate nitrogen, pH) stressors. We hope to provide the most detailed information yet in order to identify indicators of degraded or high quality sites and indicators of stressor presence. We are evaluating the effects of how reference states are defined on the character and identity of alternate states. A companion question is how stable or repeatable are alternate states across stream types. We are in the initial stages of setting up analyses to examine the effects of near-stream actions on the community state and species responses.
