Castro. M.S., C.T. Driscoll, T.E. Jordan, W.G. Reay, and W.R. Boynton. 2003. Sources of Nitrogen to Estuaries in the United States, Estuaries. Vol. 26. No. 3. p 803-814. In a Nutshell: Problem - Sources of nitrogen to estuaries need to be identified in order to develop effective management programs. What - We quantified the nitrogen sources to 34 estuaries on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States. Findings - Our results show that nitrogen inputs to 11 of 34 estuaries were dominated by urban nitrogen sources, agricultural nitrogen sources dominated nitrogen inputs to 20 of the 34 estuaries and atmospheric deposition was the dominant nitrogen source for 3 estuaries. Potential Applications - Our assessment can be used to develop cost-effective management strategies to reduce nitrogen inputs to estuaries in the United States. |
