Hilderbrand, R. H., A. C. Watts, and A. M. Randle. 2005. The myths of restoration ecology. Ecology and Society 10(1): 19. In a Nutshell: Problem - As land use changes and environmental degradation become more widespread, society becomes ever more reliant on ecological restoration for functioning systems. What - This paper is an invited commentary that details what we perceive to be myths of restoration ecology and ways forward to advance our knowledge and restoration success. Findings - We synthesize and distill restoration ecology into five central myths that explain why some restorations fail or yield disappointing results: the carbon copy; the field of dreams; fast forwarding; command and control and the Sisyphus complex; and the cookbook. Over-reliance on tacit assumptions and dogma without critical analysis can lead restorations into unrealistic expectations and untenable situations. |
