Chris is attempting to improve current atmospheric mercury transport models by making measurements of mercury fluxes across the air-soil interface. The measurements are focused on mechanisms controlling the flux of mercury from soils at background sites, which have not been affected by direct point source mercury pollution. The project is conducted at the nearby Piney River Ambient Air Monitoring Site (PRAAMS) in Garrett County, MD. The findings of the study then can be used by current large scale atmospheric transport models to better predict total mercury emission and deposition to other areas.
