Sam is trying to determine the relative importance of both environment and dispersal limitation in determining plant community composition in a fragmented forest landscape. She is looking at species turnover across geographic distance and trying to factor out environmental variables from distance effects alone. The environmental variables include soil moisture, pH, nitrate, phosphate, potassium, calcium, magnesium, organic matter, and forest canopy cover. If plant communities are still correlated with distance after factoring out these variables, then dispersal limitation may play an important role in affecting which species are found in any given area.
